Season 2, Episode 38: A Reel Fish Story
"A Reel Fish Story"
Episode 38
Air Date: November 29th, 1994
Meh!!! This episode is once again a drag instead of a promising installment. I'm sick of the rehashing of old monsters this season. This episode we get a fish theme of old monsters showing up again from Commander Crayfish to Pirantishead. While it's always cool seeing the rangers face old foes; we've already had a couple of episodes dealing with that and there will be more. I'm sure this was done for time consuming reasons as well as saving cost on newer monsters and footage but it's just tedious and boring. I didn't feel like Rocky, Aisha and Billy were in trouble at all; especially with the other 3 rangers around the corner able to help out. Also what is with the reuse of stock footage??? They reused the footage of Slippery Shark from "On Fins and Needles....", Jason, Zack and Trini swimming in "Something Fishy", etc. It's like the production team felt they had to reuse this footage to save money when I'm sure there were some ways to work around that issue. Sigh.
Also, there is a sub-plot with Rocky being a volunteer life guard and looking after a kid named Dougie, who's afraid to go in the water because he thought there would be monsters in there. The funny thing, everybody keeps telling him there's nothing to be afraid of when there are plenty things to be afraid of in Angel Grove. Sure the Power Rangers will come save the day but that's not gonna stop him from possibly getting hurt or going to alleviate his fear. It is random how he was able to overcome his fear by saving Bulk and Skull in the end. Of course, Bulk and Skull stupidly put themselves in danger trying to attract the attention of the Power Rangers. Serves them right!!! Maybe they should have drown and we could have never have seen them again.
Lastly, the monster of the day called Tube monster, I mean once again, the monster pun names are absent. It's a shame that the monster was so expendable in the end, just coming in for a last minute battle with the rangers. But then again, the monster looked pretty dumb design wise so I'm not surprised at all. Overall, "A Reel Fish Story" is as filler as filler can get. There was no real point to it. No character development, no plot movement and shameless rehashing of old footage. Power Rangers at it's cheapest but not funniest unfortunately! :(
