Season 2, Episode 33: Lights, Camera, Action
"Lights, Camera, Action"
Episode 33
Air Date: November 17th, 1994
Well, it's about time the Power Rangers made their national television debut on their own damn show. Although I don't remember this episode being as basic as I thought it would be. The rangers run on TV was much to short and a bit contrived as while the rangers spread their message of being in school and always using you head to get out of situation, it's pretty much you're run of the mill monster of the day episode with a short clip of the rangers dealing with Pudgy Pig. While I love to be reminded of the rangers' past victories as well as Pudgy Pig, the network television debut thing was so short lived and they could have done more with it. They could have mocked Jay Leno or David Letterman at the time, that would have been funny but I guess that wasn't a option then.
You know what I do like about the episode is that for the majority of the interview, it was the veteran rangers who were talking and it makes sense since they have the most stories to tell and the most experience dealing with Rita then Zedd's monsters. Of course, Bulk and Skull have to be shoved into the story of the episode with them trying to sabotage the rangers' TV debut by revealing their identities and becoming famous. I mean this is a step up from last episode where they thought Ernie was a Power Rangers since he didn't work the days there was a monster attack when we've seen Ernie there during monster attacks PLENTY of times. I mean I don't know why the writers keep making Bulk and Skull look stupid like this, especially when two episodes ago we saw that these two can be more than idiotic, selfish teens by saving the Power Rangers. But you're telling me since they forgot, their being reduce to the humiliating comic relief once again??? Ehhhhhh!!! -_-
As for the monster of the week, it was serviceable, if not ultimately forgettable. He doesnt even really get a name being called the Showbiz monster, I guess the writer who comes up with the monster pun names was sick that weak. Also, Lord Zedd's plan was all over the place this week with him trying to capture the rangers but when Goldar fails; he just sits on his ass twiddling his thumbs until he comes up with a monster that can go up against the rangers. It's kind of sad seeing Zedd being reduced to a villain who can't even succeed in the simplest of plans but ohhh well. The episode overall was pretty in it's PSA message to kids but the monster plot was worthless in the long run. It's cool seeing the rangers not only acknowledged for work but gaining more fame through network television. Oh and the whole focus on the effects of television on the world seems so dated in this interest/smart phone dominated world we live in now. Also, it was 60 years since this episode that first TV was released, not 50, Aisha!!! O_o
Final Morph: C+
