Season 2, Episode 28: The Power Transfer, Part 2
"The Power Transfer, Part 2"
Episode 28
Air Date: November 9th, 1994
Well, as Zordon deducted when he introduced the new rangers to the original 5, this is a whole new beginning for the show. With Jason, Zack and Trini off to the Peace Conference, the three new rangers, Aisha, Adam and Rocky officially take their place. But not before proving that they are once again heroes in their own right without the power. They clever escape their captivity, defeat the Putties and maneuver their way into destroying that sleeping gas machine once and for all. I think what would have been better if we got to see the three departing rangers interact with the new rangers before leaving but of course, that wasn't going to happen with the behind the scenes trouble leaving the writers no choice to to cut the some of the original cast out while the other half stayed to continue with the show.
The Power Transfer sequence is quite odd though with the powers not transferring to the new rangers but being COPIED on to them. Jason, Zack and Trini remain morphed, which makes sense giving some storylines in the far future for the franchise. I just find it funny how the episodes are called "The Power Transfer" when there is no such thing happening. I mean one could say that the powers were in fact transferred even though Jason, Zack and Trini are still morphed. While they are still technically in suit, the powers have officially been transferred and the power coins on their belts are in fact powerless now from the transfer. It also makes sense that the Sword of Light would be needed to transfer the power since it is a large number of rangers having their powers transferred to new rangers, unlike say, next season when the power transfer happens again, it's just one ranger handing off their power coin to a new rangers. But once again, I'm getting ahead of myself! LOL
For the first fight for the new rangers, it's pretty standard: the rangers must handle some putties and a new monster at the same time, Zedd makes the monster big and they summon their zords. But first Rocky, the new Red Ranger, decides to handle the monster alone while the other deal with the arrival of Serpentra on Earth. Honestly, I don't know what their plan was for fighting a zord that big but it doesn't make sense to me!!! O_o Anyway, the Red Dragon Thunderzord is having trouble with the monster of the week, Silver Horns when Tommy decides to help him with his Tigerzord. Both zord engage the monster, with the help of Tor with eventually the other rangers calling on their zords to help out as well. The rangers form the Thunder Ultrazord with Tor (I'm assuming that's what it's called, since it hasn't officially been given a name yet) Of course, the finisher is hilarious as it flies and lands right on top of the monster destroying it. The episode ends with Serpentra running out of power after destroying the deserted planet and flies off back to the moon while the new ranger team celebrate their first victory together as they put their hands together and jump saying "Power Rangers".
While it's frustrating we didn't get a face to face goodbye from the old rangers, this was a great episode anyway. Though it's yet to be seen how the new characters and old characters will interact now; seeing if the old chemistry will still be there but this two episode did an excellent job of transitioning the show with new rangers. In fact, outside of their horrible introductions, Aisha, Adam and Rocky proved to be wonderful additions to the show as new allies but it has yet to be seen how they will continue to do as rangers. Unfortunately, I don't remember the second half of this season being all that great but we'll see of my rewatch of it. Anywho....
Final Morph: B+
