Season 1, Episode 7: Big Sisters
"Big Sisters"
Episode 7
Air Date: September 30, 1993
Ehw!!! If there is one thing this episode introduces that I don't like is those one off child actors. Seriously, Power Rangers is already a pretty poorly acted shows but when it comes to it's child actors, they are demonic charisma suckers!! I don't care for Maria, her painfully obvious ADR and the embarrassing way the writers try to incorporate the Sentai footage of an asian girl being held captive that's suppose to be Maria! HA! I just can't stand the scenes about her, especially her in it and want to skim through them as fast as possible. After Maria causes some dumb pranks, Kim and Trini talk to her about what she did not being nice and she sort of apologizes (BRAT!) Anyway, Rita's plot for the episode is some chest that has magical eggs in it and using a ridiculous chicken monster to capture a child so the innocent thing can open it! I think what's even more ridiculous is that we get this quick backstory about the eggs when I'd rather hear how Rita and Zordon's rivalry started in the first place! How she trap him in the time warp and all that but whatever! After some terrible acting and forced ADR from Maria, we get a Puttie fight with the girls trying to defend her but she gets taken. Seriously, they should have just told her to run off so they could dispatch the Putties on their own but OK!
Maria is taken anyway and the girls regroup with the guys at the Youth Center. For some reason, communcation and teleportation to the Command Center is down; but Billy's been working on something. It turns out to be a Radbug, a stupid looking car that can be an alternative transportation for the rangers to the Command Center. Yes, this is the first appearance of that dumb car we rarely see but the fact that Billy can create such advanced technology will be something more prominent throughout the series until his departure in Zeo. Anyway, the rangers get to the Command Center and Zordon goes into exposition mode again about the eggs, their history and what the rangers need to do to the protect by showing flashbacks of the past through the Viewing globe!
Long story short the rangers use the Radbug because the teleportation is still down when really it's because the Sentai footage demands it! The Chunky Chicken is holding Maria captive at the old warehouse while Goldar, Squatt and Baboo have their hands on the eggs thanks to the adolescent cancer! The rangers moprh (Seriously, I waiting until "It's morphing time" is not just a casual phrase said before they morph and is said with the urgent delivery I remember as a kid) A pretty decent fight ensues and the rangers for the first time do that whole blade blaster Star formation blast. When they find out where Maria is....they call the zords...and form the megazord??? I know the Sentai footage called for it but isn't that breaking one of Zordon's rules of escalating a battle!?! But I guess when an irritating child is in danger, that's an exception. Rita rides down to Earth on a silly unicycle after the rangers, some how, return the eggs to the sea and she tells the Chick to kill the little chick! (Get it!?) Anyway, the rangers saved her and they just tell her to go to the RadBug, which has some auto-driving capabilities....because! Then again, you're leaving a small child in a freakin' dumb car to save her life but whatever! Rita makes the Chucky Chicken grow, the zord fight commences and the rangers dispatch the thing; turning into Kentucky Fried Chicken!!
Suddenly Maria is a big star at her school for being saved by the rangers as we watch the fakest Newscast ever in history. Then Kimberly spills some of Ernie's, I sorry, ALL of Ernie's mystery chilli on Bulk. Seriously, I'm starting to feel bad for the guy, this is like the 5th or 6th episode where Bulk is covered in some food because some spilled, threw or he fell into it. But the actor is getting paid so, there could be worse professions!
Meh, this episode is average at best. Maria, like I said is awful and the Chucky Chicken is a forgettable monster. We get more backstory on the eggs than we need, the RadBug intro is just laughable but at least they kept Bulk and Skull's "getting humiliated" shtick until the end.
