Season 1, Episode 55: Second Chance
"Second Chance"
Episode 55
Air Date: May 4, 1994
Well, this is a MUCH better episode than last because stuff actually happens and we don't have to watch a mediocre plot drag until we finally get to the action. So Ernie puts the list for the Angel Grove Junior Soccer team and all the kids who made are excited, except for one, named Greg.....(maybe I'm confusing his name with my Smallville review) but whatever the kid's name is, Jason and Zack decide to help him by convincing Ernie to have a second tryout for the kids, to the little boy's excitement. Rita, watching, gets an idea to create a monster called...sigh... Soccadilo, that they begin to charge as he will be near invincible to destroy by the rangers. Meanwhile, back at Angel Grove High, the teens are talking about Jason and Zack helping the little guy when Bulk and Skull but in and cause an accident by kicking a soccer ball. Tommy's communicator accidentally gets smashed into a wall and begins acting up. I just love hearing Zordon saying, "Zordon out!" LOL It's just so hilarious!!! In class, Tommy's communicator keeps ringing, forcing Mrs. Applebee to take it from him; to Bulk and Skull's amusement.
Meanwhile, back at the park, Jason and Zack are teaching the kid how to play but he sucks....no need to beat around the bush (is that the saying??? O_o) Rita, back at the Moon Palace, wants to send the monster down but Goldar tells her it isn't fully charged yet but he will send a squad of Putties. He sends the Putties as Jason and Zack tell the boy to hide. They wonder what the Putties are doing until Rita becomes even more impatient and sends the monster down regardless. To Jason and Zack's shock and amusement, they watch the Putties play soccer with the monster in it's balled up form as it heads for them. They begin fighting the Putties as they kick and knock the monster out of their way in the process. Alpha and Zordon alert the other rangers to help them as they teleport to the park and help them while Trini looks after the kid. I have to say the Puttie fights have come a LONG way from the shaky cam, poorly edited fights that they were at the start of the season. This Puttie fight is actually directed well, showing the rangers each maneuvering around the monster while fighting off the Putties. After the Putties are defeated and the monster disappears, to Rita's irritation, the teens reunite to the little boy telling them how awesome that was. "They're the Power Rangers kid, that's how they did it, no wonder you didn't make the team, squirt!"
Back at the Command Center, Zordon tells them about the Soccadilo and how they are unable to defeat it without the Green Ranger. Meanwhile, Tommy heads to detention to try to ask Ms. Applebee for his communicator back. Meanwhile, the rangers decide to head out without Tommy as Alpha can't seem to get in touch with him. They morph and begin their fight with the Soccadilo but are having a tough time as he seems indestructible; especially in his soccer ball form. Meanwhile, Tommy aks Ms. Applebee for his communicator back when he gets caught trying to take it back. The rangers continue their fight against Soccadilo, even doing their Star Formation blast that ineffective. Meanwhile, Tommy gets his communicator back and finally gets into contact with Zordon and Alpha. After being told the rangers need him, he morphs into action and kicks the Soccadilo back into his monster form. The rangers excited to see him, all team-up against the monster managing to push him back. Rita then throws her wand and makes him grow. The rangers summon their zords as well as the Dragonzord. The rangers all engage in a megazord battle with the monster until they are able wait until he comes out of his soccer ball form to finish him off with the Power Sword Finisher.
The next day the little kid makes the Angel Grove Junior Soccer Team to everyone's excitement to which I say no way, how can a kid go from sucking one day and captain of the soccer team the next!! Pity pick, I say! Bulk and Skull end the episode with their stupidity and yeah, decent episode. I like the Soccadilo and the visual of him rolling around. Besides the tacky pun name, he was a cool monster with a nice motive and attacks. But this is filler pretty much....
Final Morph: C+
