Season 1, Episode 25: Life's A Masquerade
"Life's A Masquerade"
Episode 25
Air Date: October 30, 1993
Awww, this is a really fun episode!!! It's another episode that captures the essence of my favorite aspects of the show: absurdity, awesome action and a monster that's so ridiculous, it's possibly the toughest the rangers have ever encountered. And it's a Halloween episode, which makes it even more special. I got to say I love all the characters in this episode as even Bulk and Skull have some good comedic bits in this episode trying to find costumes to wear for the party. Though I'm noticing these guys are more accident prone than Steve Urkel!!! O_o
Rita decides to dispatch a Frankenstein monster on the rangers to keep them preoccupied while Finster works on her Super Putties; apparently almost invincible versions of her Puttie Patrol. Not a bad plan; at least it beats last episode's plan of just breaking Kimberly's float just to ruin her day. Truly, Rita is so evil to do such a thing!!! LOL It's just hilarious watching the characters in their costumes: Billy as Sherlock Homes, Jason as Robin Hood, Zack as King Tut, Trini as a Native American and Kimberly as Maid Marian. Even Alpha gets to join in the fun, with everyone thinking he's just in costume! But the funniest part of the episode was is seeing the Frankenstein interacting with people at the party; almost killing a girl he was forced to dance with. Bulk and Skull intervene and he chases them out of there. Billy, thinking that's Tommy for some reason, follows him to the cave where Finster is working on the Super Putties. Billy somehow sets off an indicator that a ranger is there and the Frankenstein monster is sent to attack him. The evil thing attacks Billy, forcing him to realize he isn't Tommy and morphs in the nerdiest way possible: "It's time for molecular transmutation!" Say that ten times fast!
Billy and the monster fight with Billy getting his behind beaten as usual. Meanwhile, the Super Putties are done being made and Rita unleashes them onto the world by....causing an earthquake and riding the Super Puttie Clay Bolder to the surface. Billy rushes out of the cave to warn the others at the Youth Center and decide to head to the Command Center without Tommy. At the Command Center, Zordon is brief with telling them about the monster of the week and the Super Putties so the rangers can morph and get down to business! They fight the Frankenstein monster, who easily kicks ALL of their collective asses and Rita decides to make him grow while gloating. Jesus lady, you haven't won yet....in fact, you've barely won at all!!! Shut up! O_o Ok, so the rangers summon their zords while Tommy is being attacked by Putties. At least Rita knew to at least attack Tommy since he's always saving the core 5 rangers at this point when they need him. Man, this fight is....AWESOME!!! It's brutal seeing the megazord getting tossed not only around, but into multiple buildings!! Seriously, how does Angel still inhabitable with all this monster/zord fights destroying the city all the time like this??!! We're talking billions of dollars in damages and reconstruction here!! Jesus!!
Anyway, Tommy finally dispatches the Putties and joins the rangers in time to call on Dragonzord with his Dragon Dagger (man, that NEVER gets old!!) But even the combined forces of the megazord and Dragonsord can't beat him. WOW!!! So the rangers, for the first time, try a new zord configuration with Mega Dragonzord. I love how even a powerful new zord has trouble kicking the monster's ass as he even deflects blast right at it!!! LOL Damn, I love this monster. But the rangers keep fighting and go for the finishing move; drilling a hole into him that destroys him for good. Back at the party, Tommy reveals his costume to be a rip-off of the monster of the week (Seriously, when did he have time to make all these changes that the monster inspired???) and Alpha wins the costume contest to even Bulk and Skull disbelief! lol
All and All, this was a great episode. I like the Halloween plot with the Frankenstein monster being the most powerful and entertaining monster of the week yet. I loved seeing the rangers struggle to fight him in both ranger form and in their zords. Alpha's part in the episode was genuinely amusing but if there's one thing I don't understand is why Zack is STILL going after Angela??? -_- After two or three appearances, she's clearly not interested and a stuck up b!tch! Move on dude! O_o
Final Morph: B+
