Season 7, Episode 37: Grunchor on the Loose
"Grunchor On The Loose"
Episode 37
Air Date: November 15th, 1999
Jesus, Grunchor is possibly the most gruesome monster we've ever seen on this show so far! O_O From mere size, design and especially strength, it's a shame he didn't last longer for a couple more episodes! God knows this arc could have used a lot more tension and urgency that this episode has. I mean outside of the HUGE plothole of Grunchor being able to reach other domes in the colony connected to tunnels (Seriously, that's the problem with adapting an Earth based Sentai on a space colony! -_-), this was really suspenseful episode as the rangers and the rest of colony race to find and stop Grunchor from taking Terra Venture down. The rangers try to stop him with their powered up Quasar Launchers on the Grunchor when it comes out of the ground in a roadway tunnel. But unfortunately, it's in effective and borrows back into the ground. Meanwhile, Deviot begins to work for Captain Mutiny and he seems to be hesitant about it since Deviot worked for Trakeena but he decides to give him a chance...for now! As Deviot leads the Swabies to try to lure Grunchor out around the harbor of the colony, the rangers arrive to stop them. They fight the Swabies and manage to get the tracker off of Deviot. Maya is uncharacteristically violent during all this; wanting to stop Deviot right then and there by destroying him but Leo stops her from doing so as they need to find out how to stop Grunchor. He finally tells them it's fire that's his weakness and escapes as the rangers use the tracker to find where Grunchor will attack next.
As the colony's soldiers continue to search for Grunchor, the rangers meet up with Mike and split into teams as Mike and Leo follow the tracker as the other 4 rangers go to stop Barbarax and a group of Swabies also trying to track Grunchor underground. The 4 rangers fight and try to stop Barbarax but he is too powerful for them as Grunchor borrows through the ground. As Mike and Leo track Grunchor to a quarry, they also run into Grunchor as Barbarax arrives to stop them. The other rangers rejoin them as Barbarax retreats when Grunchor reveals himself again. Mike tells the rangers if their powers, maybe they can destroy him. As the rangers join hands, they channel all the energy into a raging fire that blasts Grunchor and seemingly destroys him! Only it didn't and he returns as an even bigger and more grotesque monster. Jesus!!!! O_O Super Grunchor is even scarier than his last form; leading the rangers to call on their zords to form the Galaxy Megazord and Defender Torozord. I got to say that this is one of the lengthiest and intense zord battles of the franchise; which is refreshing and exciting considering the zord battles have been mostly short this season! O_o We even get a moment where all 4 megazords join forces against Grunchor and it's still isn't enough to destroy him.
After getting word of Grunchor fighting the rangers in their megazords, Captain Mutiny detaches his castle from Titanisaur and arrives firing at the megazords before attaching itself on top of Grunchor's head. Mike tries his best with a final finishing move from the Defender Torozord but it forced to eject from it when Grunchor strikes a devastating blow! Meanwhile, Leo's been using most of his energy to give the Galaxy Megazord more power but it just isn't enough to defeat Grunchor...until the other rangers arrive in his cockpit to give him more power. It's a touching and intense moment as all 5 join forces to create a massive fire to destroy Grunchor. The Stratoforce and Centaurus Megazords also combine their power with the Galaxy Megazord to give it maximum power. Finally, Grunchor is destroy as the rangers cheer and celebrate. But unfortunately, the rangers have no where of finding Mutiny's planet with all the slaves as Terra Venture has lost track of it. As the episode concludes, the rangers look up as they vow to escape the lost galaxy. Overall, this was a tremendously fun episode with a very intense zord fight that kept me on the edge of my seat....or in this cause....my bed! :P Wonderful start to the arc...it's just a shame the writers couldn't keep it up for the next few episodes!
Final Morph: A
