Season 7, Episode 30: To the Tenth Power
"To The Tenth Power"
Episode 30
Air Date: November 4th, 1999
I remember watching "Rangers of Two Worlds, Part 2" and while I enjoyed the two parter, it came to me that with the continuous storyline going on with the first 6 seasons, that team-ups like this would be near impossible. In Space toyed with the idea with various mini-team ups with past rangers like Justin and Adam but it never seemed like it would be possible for a full on previous team/current team crossover. In a world where Hollywood is desperate to make their own cinematic universes thanks to the MCU, the idea of a TV show or film having multiple crossovers with numerous heroes is now very common to the point now we are spoiled by having our favorite heroes interact with each other on the same screen. The writers toyed with the PR Universe being a grander world building franchise with plenty of heroes like.....sigh....the Teenage Mutant Ninga Turtles but at this point, the universe could now begin to build on it's previous history of rangers (like Super Sentai) with having former rangers return to aid the newest team with an old or new threat thanks to new story every season trend that started here. "To The Tenth Power" was the first of the annual ranger team-up episodes and while that tradition has long since died after the Disney owned years and especially the 20th anniversary season, it's awesome to look back at how fun and enormously entertaining it was to see two teams of rangers interact as well as fight together on screen year after year. Sure some team-up episodes plain sucked but the majority of them really capitalized on the endless possibilities of having two different rangers teams working together...sometimes even against each other could be.
But I'm getting ahead of myself as I should start talking about this episode already! After a mysterious first scene where a hideous looking alien meets up with Deviot on an unknown planet, we see he has a key to the briefcase he has that turns out to have 5 very familiar looking data cards inside of it. After Deviot destroys the alien for double crossing him, Deviot returns to the Scorpion Stinger to return the date cards back to their original forms aka The Psycho Rangers!!! :) Oh God, it's great to see and hear these psychotic villains again, especially considering how they own the Galaxy Rangers immediately in mere minutes of being released! Good thing Trakeena manage to collars on them that can trigger pain! Oh and it would have been nice to see Psycho Black's reaction to having to go after a Green Ranger instead of a Black Ranger! lol Anyway, like I said, the Psychos make quick work of the Galaxy Rangers, first targeting Maya and Damon. Of course Maya has to be a b!tch and make Damon carry the groceries and complains when he trips. EHHHH!!! -_- Anyway, next Kai and Kendrix are captured and I love how the Psychos just beat them up to the point where they stop them from morphing! Awesome!!! Lastly, Psycho Red attacks Leo and while Leo manages to morph, Psycho Red beats him in a fight so bad that he is forced to demorph! Jesus! O_O
Luckily, there's been this guy in a familiar looking cloak tracking down the data cards as well and manages to arrive to save Leo just in from Psycho Red. As the cloaked figure and Leo retreat, they find an area where Leo can recover.....oh for the love of god Andros, you're not fooling anyone! Forced conspicuousness is FORCED!!! It's just an awesome moment seeing these two red rangers meet, especially Leo being in the presence of one of the rangers who saved Earth during "Countdown to Destruction"!!! :) As Andros tells Leo about Psycho Red, they head back to the Astro Megaship where Alpha is of course, ecstatic to see Andros again. Mike quickly introduces himself as Andros is able to track down where the rangers are. I love how Andros takes charge of the situation since he knows the Psychos and how they think. They go to the Power Vault next where we see the Space Rangers left their morphers there. I love how Andros mentioned he didn't think he would have needed it again before telling Leo and Mike the plan.
At the warehouse dome, as Trakeena, her forces and the Psychos taunt the captured rangers, suddenly Leo arrives with Andros after blowing up the door to the warehouse. I love how Psycho Red is pissed by his presence! As Leo and Andros lead the Psychos out for a fight, Trakeena and her generals follow. Mike use this as an opportunity to free the rangers as they rejoin Leo and Andros. As all 7 come together, the Psychos corner them....until the arrival of 4 more former rangers who also got their morphers back from the Power Vault. I just LOVE seeing T.J., Cassie, Ashley and Carlos back! Carlos even got a haircut! Nice! After an epic morph sequence with the In Space theme playing the background, the rest of the Galaxy Rangers also morph as the theme quickly switches over to the Lost Galaxy theme so seamlessly! The first official team-up features the annual huge explosion in the background, which yes, extremely cheesy, is just so awesome to watch; giving me chills every time! What follows is one of the best and more intricately choreographed fight sequences of the franchise as each former ranger and their respected successor face off against their Psycho counterpart! From sword fighting, weapon blasting, etc. these fights are just jaw dropping in how well done each team of rangers fights against the freakin' Psycho Rangers! O_o Also, the sequence of the Space Rangers using their weapons combined with the Galaxy Rangers using the Lights of Orion on the Psycho Rangers was a very impressive moment of effects and action even to this day!!! I wish the franchise had this kind of budget again!
I just love seeing all the rangers reuniting at the Megaship. Apparently Alpha sent out a distress signal to the rest of the Space Rangers to come help. They also can stay for a limited amount of time as they are needed on Earth for some reason. I love how Maya offers to give the Space Rangers a tour when she's the LEAST qualified of Galaxy Rangers to do so.....just more reason to not like Maya!!! Ehhhh...anyway, back at the aftermath of the Psycho Rangers' destruction, Psycho Pink rises from the rumble barely alive as Deviot arrives to take her with him as the episode ends. One of the best episodes of the franchise as the annual ranger team-up starts off incredibly strong! :)
Final Morph: A+
