Season 6, Episode 40: The Impenetrable Web
"The Impenetrable Web"
Episode 40
Air Date: November 13th, 1998
Soooooo...this episode....ummmm.....I didn't like it.....not one bit!!! I mean the action was great and the concluding battle against Ecliptor was awesome, but there were too many plot holes for me to enjoy this one!!! Like 1) Since when did Darkonda start working with Astronema again??? He just shows up to fool the rangers with a false distress signal and is leading Astronema's army against the rangers as well as taking orders from Astronema again....am I missing something? Like a lost episode or two because last time we saw Darkonda he was being kicked off the Dark Fortress by Astronema so what's is it with him, Astronema and Ecliptor working together like that never happened again!? O_O Both Astronema and especially Ecliptor seem smarter for doing that again in trusting him. Also 2) The rangers' powers are tied to the Megaship....HUH??? Seriously, this comes out of nowhere and should have been previously established! -_- The origins of the Space powers should have been explained by Andros at some point in the season before this as it would have made more sense! Suddenly the rangers are cut off from their powers because there's an energy web around the Megaship....WTF??? It's just jarring and especially doesn't make sense when Zhane arrives to save the team toward the end of the episode.
3) I don't mind Alpha and D.E.C.A. teaming up against Ecliptor when he tries to take over the Megaship. It was actually pretty entertaining as I really enjoy this version of Alpha 6 being so useful and resourceful. But how the hell did he discover the location of the Mega Voyager when D.E.C.A. needed a specific code to access that information. Wouldn't D.E.C.A. have made that information very classified and unacceptable to Ecliptor to gain access too??? O_o Anyway, as Darkonda is about to destroy the captured and powerless rangers, Zhane comes out of no where with a new weapon/vehicle, the Galactic Rover.....and he's morphed........-_- 4) How the hell is Zhane able to morph or stay morphed when the others can't. What is the source of HIS powers then!!!? -_- Things like this don't make any sense and feel like they were forgotten during the story writing process. It's just so weird when the writing has been so tight and immensely strong this season! Weird!
Anyway, as Ecliptor heads to one of Jupiter's moons to destroy the Mega Voyager on Astronema's command, Alpha contacts the rangers and Andros sends Zhane out to stop since he is the only one that can stop him!!! Grrrrrrr!!! -_- Anyway, when Ecliptor arrives there, apparently his powers have been enhanced.....some how, it's not clear!!! O_o Like alot of things this episode as Zhane arrives to fight him. But he is too powerful now as he grows on his own. Meanwhile, Andros gets the idea to use his new battlizer to try to free the Megaship from the energy web......which leads us to problem 6) Andros can morph into his battlizer mode but can't into his ranger form??? WHAT!!? -_- Oh and Andros uses the battlizer to free the Megaship from the energy web when earlier, the Megaship's mega lasers could not break through it??? Seriously, this episode makes. NO. SENSE!!!
Anyway, the rangers meet up Zhane in the Mega Winger with the Astro Megaship and Delta Megaship after Eclitpor has damaged the holding bay for the Mega Voyager. During the initial battle, Ecliptor destroys the Delta Megazord; to the shock of all the rangers. He soon heads to Earth as the Astro Megazord chases after him. During an intense battle between them, Ecliptor returns to regular size as the Space Rangers counter him and engage in a final battle against him. It's pretty awesome with all the rangers getting some great hits in but it's Andros who finishes him off with his Battlizer morpher and Spiral Saber. But Ecliptor survives the attack and escapes, vowing blah, blah, blah, blah, BLAH!!! Anyway, the rangers check on the damage of the Mega Voyager while lamenting the destruction of the Delta Megazord. With one zord destroyed and one damaged, Astronema puts her next plan immediately into motion! All and all, this was a very mediocre episode for me. Had some great action but considering this has been a season with such strong storytelling, this was a surprising misstep! Sorry! :(
