Season 4, Episode 13: Recruit
"Recruit"
Episode 13
Air Date: February 9th, 2005
Ewwwwww, the only thing remotely decent about this episode is the fact that by the end Clark has some genuine character growth and insight about where his future lies considering the events of the episode. But BOY...before we get there is.....rough and.....deeply boring! I found the story with Geoff Johns more like a plot point to just to get Clark to quit football instead of being a rather enriching story and lesson about using enhanced abilities in sports because of the immense pressure of winning. I mean I guess this has been a very obvious metaphor for steroids, but honestly, the execution is just so blatantly pathetic and sad. Are we really suppose to feel sorry for Geoff Johns....who has the same name as the legendary DC writer O_O??? I mean he just comes off just like your average meteor freak....actually scratch that! Most meteor freaks actually have far more compelling motivations than Geoff just wanting to win football games with his powers and stopping other people from finding out! Also, Lois being in the middle of this feels too superfluous and isn't a good use at all of the lovely, immensely talented Erica Durance! It's obvious from the start of the episode she didn't do it and even when she interacts with Clark this episode is is way too brief!
I guess what I can take from this episode in terms of enjoyment factor is Chloe's new refreshing and priceless interaction with Clark now that she knows his secret. It's just so much fun seeing Allison Mack play off of Tom's clueless performance of Clark who is desperately wondering what is going on with Chloe's not so subtly hinting at knowing something about Clark that he doesn't. lol Also it was nice to see at the end that after Clark comes to realization of quitting football, Chloe proudly supports his decision and even gives a bit of insight on how great his future lies beyond the field of football. Also, the moment where Lois so shamelessly and desperately forces herself to move in to the Kents is beyond priceless, especially Clark's whiplash expression after. lol But honestly, that's where the episode ends in terms of anything remotely interesting as we get a beyond tired sub-plot with Lex, the Teagues and Lana again. Which I'm sorry, this witch storyline sucks! It is so dumb and nonsensical that it's becoming full of plot holes already. Lex gives Jason a new job to apparently work together to stop his mother but wants him to spy on her AND Lana too. Jason goes to Lana about this and is of course pissed about such an arrangement, especially with the guy that got him fired.
But then when Lana confronts him about it, he turns it around on Jason and later reveals to Lex that Jason and his mother met in Paris a week before they met. I just find that so hard to believe when Jason was so shocked at the possibility of his mother setting them up but now we're suppose to believe he was in on it from the start??? So is Ms. Teague setting up Jason too??? Well that can't be true since Jason lied about his mother being in the Hamptons at the time, it's like "WTF" is going on??? O_O Just throw this storyline away already but we can't since it's a major part of this stone search storyline this season. Ewwww!!! Recruit is a major bore and eye score of a storyline with only glimpses of something worth watching in a handful of scenes. -_-
