Season 4, Episode 11: Unsafe
"Unsafe"
Episode 11
Air Date: January 26th, 2005
All I can say is....YAY!!! Alicia's back! Oh joy! Rapture! :_) Ok, I'm sorry any episode that sees Clark having interest in another female aka NOT Lana is as refreshing as the show can get at this point in its run. So thankfully not only are both dealing with their own separate storylines this episode, we are reintroduced to fan favorite one off character that the writers clearly loved too as Sarah Carter makes her way back to the series as a reformed and cured Alicia a year after she went psycho as well as being put in Belle Reeve. My goodness, I really can't express enough how gorgeous and sexy Sarah Carter is (Seriously I don't play for her team yet...WOW!) She's just so naturally charming too as the character and has instant chemistry with Tom Welling that is just in time as Clark is once again feeling the weight of his loneliness in not able to date and share his secret with a girl who may or may not be able to handle his secret. Luckily, Alicia is free and sane so Clark can try to see where things go with them this time. Awwwww its so cute seeing them ice skate together, not to mention seeing Clark genuinely happy is always a plus on this show since we don't see it too often. Of course, not all things can remain happy and wonderful as Alicia's doctor, Dr. McBride has tracked her down to make sure she stays away from Clark as he was the reason behind her psychotic break.
While what Alicia does next is completely crazy and irresponsible, it's just fun seeing Clark and Alicia getting married and talking about having sex. Yeah, there is an overarching theme with sex this episode which sounds like it was trying to speak its teenage audience at the time. While it's never really explained how Alicia found out about Red K and its effects on Clark, their Vegas wedding as well as their honeymoon suite sequence is definitely fun, hilarious and dare I say really sexy! O_o Seriously, Tom and Sarah have such intense sexual chemistry......I wonder if they.....off set...... Nevermind! O_O lol But it isn't only Clark dealing with taking his love life to the next level as Lana makes the assumption that Jason left her before they haven't had sex yet and she's not ready. I'm just overjoyed the writers are addressing this, especially given the demographic watching would definitely would want to know if their favorite characters are sexually active and how it effects them when it comes to how they deal with sex. I'm just shocked that Chloe isn't when Lana comes to her to talk about her latest relationship dilemma. Even more shock, it was with a guy named "Jimmy" and he was cute in a "bow tie" kind of way??? So you're telling me in the Smallville universe Jimmy Olsen lost his virginity before Clark Kent/Superman??? Yeah....just think about that! O_o
Turns out the real reason for Jason breaking up with her is his mother as he believes he arranged their meeting considering it's too much of a coincidence that she has a connection with what has been happening to Lana since she got that tattoo from Isobel's tomb. I just find this whole storyline problematic because of the witch inclusion of it but at least it's keeping Lana away from Clark. Onto Lionel and Lex's drama as Lex is beyond shocked by his father's release from prison but Lionel tries his hardest to prove to his son that he has changed his way. I have to admit, I'm with Lex on his father putting an act even tho we know Lionel's cured liver disease gave him a new lease on life. But I do have to say, I miss the evil Lionel of the past 2 seasons as Lex isn't exactly in his becoming evil phase of his journey to his future self but clearly his father's sudden conversion maybe what is instrumental in pushing him more toward his dark side. Hmmmmm.....as for the conflict at hand, Dr. McBride seemed like a last minute superficial bad guy who apparently is obsessed with Alicia to the point that he needs to get Clark out of the way. But I have to say, seeing Alicia get shot was beyond shocking and heartbreaking. Seriously, the final couple of scenes are emotionally charged from Clark's tearful confession to Martha about how Alicia makes him feel to Alicia swearing to keep Clark's secret even if they can't be together which leads to a breakdown from her that leaves me truly in love with her myself. Poor girl! They really know how to make Alicia so relatable, especially to Clark, that I'm not surprised they decided to bring her back and keep her around for more than one episode. Unsafe is remarkable fun episode because of the return of a wonderful character that the writers explore even more turning her from your average meteor freak psycho to a three dimensional teen who's just looking for love and comfort in someone just like her. Sigh.....:(
