Power Rangers Super Megaforce Overview

Power Rangers Super Megaforce: Season 21
Episode Count: 20 + Extended Special
Air Date: February 15th, 2014-November 22nd, 2014

Is there really any point going in-depth with this season???  Honestly trying to analyzed Super Megaforce would be like trying find any life in a dead animal that has clearly hasn't been alive for days!!! -_-  But that is what Super Megaforce is....lifeless.....EMPTY!!! My god, even the very last scene isn't about what the rangers have learned from their journey as rangers and what they plan to do next....they just decide to go home as Troy leaves his sword in the sand....that's it!  But then again for two seasons worth of NO character development and story, what exactly was there to wrap up to begin with.  How unfortunate that the 20th season of the show was a rushed run through of Goseiger's footage but at least if the anniversary had to be pushed back to the 21st year, that the writers would use that time to seriously making up for that for old and new fans of the show.  But nope! I think there was someone on the writing team that for sure wanted to make an authentic tribute season, maybe even bring some kind of full circle theme with the past ranger teams meets the new team that can take on all of their powers but it seems it was all so horribly lost in translation from script to film as Super Megaforce is the type of show a massive amount of non fans think it is.  Poorly made, dumb writing, silly/over the top effects with no depth or anything to really get excited about.  Gokiager pretty much had the dream theme for its 35th anniversary yet Power Rangers takes one of the most amazingly executed Sentais and turns it into one of the show's biggest missed opportunity, if not the biggest missed opportunity of the franchise!!!

That's honestly what sums up Super MegaFreakin' Awful for me!!! There is no story even when an anniversary season like this needs the biggest and best story of the show so far; drawing from the previous 20 years of the show to show how far the series has come by a new team taking on various powers of the rangers of the past to take on the most powerful threat ANY team has faced.  The armada are.....there.....they are there....and they they are destroyed one by one.  Anything that might resemble some character development or depth on their part like finding out about Vekar's father's reservations about his son being out there leading the armada are quickly ended because the villain is destroyed by the rangers fairly easily.  I mean Damarus, Argus and especially Levira are pathetic generals who shouldn't have existed at all.  Levira's defeat is so laughable, especially when you realize the only thing she had going for her this season was being in love with Jake in "Love Is In the Air".  Damarus, who's suddenly revealed to be the most powerful warrior in the universe is killed off by the rangers so quick, it almost seems like a punchline that was set up in the episode aka "Emperor Mavro".  I mean I guess Argus gets a climatic fight with Noah but his defeat doesn't warrant any feeling besides "Ok Noah is badass but....who cares?!? O_O"  Then you have the Emperor himself who just shows up for the last 3 episodes....yet it all amounts to nothing despite Gosei making a HUGE deal that he's too powerful for the rangers to possibly handle.  Outside of momentarily fighting off Troy and Orion while sitting on his throne, he is also, once again, so easily defeated! And yeah, I know there is a bonus fight scene in the extended movie edition of the finale with all 6 rangers having a more climatic battle against the Emperor but STILL, who cares?!! There is no weight or connection between these rangers and these villains to make us care.  I mean at least The Nighlok had this twisted humanity angle that effected Jake and the others on some emotional level with Deker, Dayu, even the rangers almost sacrificing themselves to become Nighlok to save Emily in one episode.

But the armada are the most generic villains the show has EVER adapted! What a waste! Don't even get me started on the Super Mega Mode and legendary powers having no point but to just exists because Gosei had them from the start but decides to give it to the rangers when the invasion starts but NOT when he could have given it to them to possibly prevent it. Seriously, the Mega Force powers and especially the significant Super Mega Modes have no backstory, no existing lore or connection to some type of substantial mythology...they just exist cause of all these ranger keys.  Where did the ranger keys come from???  How did the 6th one end up on distant planet encased in stone??? "There's a simple explanation for that!"  That's the answer to everything bad about this show! The Sentai only suits aka new before seen new powers! Professor Cog being alive! Jake becoming the Green Ranger for no apparent reason when he activates Super Mode! The rangers having to morph into Mega Force before morphing into Super Mega...even when they can just morph straight into Super Mega from the start! Troy's vision of the legendary battle and having random magical powers to knock the living evil out of Robo Knight! The random ranger cameos with no purpose besides Casey actually teaching two of them something! No Lightspeed morph unless you watch the extended edition! The horrible editing! The nonsensical addition of Sentai only suits in new footage wasting money! Not to mention, the legendary rangers returning for the final fight, including Robo Knight who should be dead! It's all so simple and can be explained........we're just STILL waiting for it! HAHAHAHAHA! The lunacy!!! *Madness ensues*

The rangers are exactly how they were from beginning to end of these two seasons.  Outside of Orion having some depth with his random backstory with tragedy and revenge, the rest of the team have no arc. "Blue Saber Saga" is just a retread of what Noah had already learned a season ago and he doesn't change at all.  Jake wants to ask Gia out and still puts it off until she makes a move at the very end of the finale...because! ......Yeah, that's about it! Gosei and Tensou....they just disappear mid-finale never to be spoken of or thanked by the rangers for the past two years.  Then again, it makes sense because it doesn't make any sense or have any real relevance sooooo..... Ummmmm Vrak came back for two episode that don't even make sense as titles because the writers are so dumb and lazy that they think Vrak's name is pronounced similar to "back!"  I suppose Vrak was the most proactive and persistent of all the villains the past two seasons but even in the end, his demise leaves you scratching your head instead of being truly satisfied by it.  All that elaborate planning and the rangers can just tap into the same power source to kill him....BECAUSE! O_o  The tribute episodes all sucked out "Spirit of the Tiger" thanks to Jason Smith's involvement and the actual legendary battle is possibly a bigger misfire of fan service garbage than even "Once A Ranger" from Overdrive.  WOW! Good riddance to this, Megaforce and even the two Samurai seasons before.  The Neo Saban Era has been......shockingly damn near unwatchable but thank goodness there's a little bit of hope with Dino Charge ahead at least.  See you all there! *Shivers*

Pros:
  • Witnessing past ranger teams through legendary morphs
  • The excellent Gokianger footage
  • The attempt at at least giving Orion an arc and backstory
  • The only decent tribute episode in "Spirit of the Tiger"

Cons:
  • Some of the absolute worst writing of the series thus far!
  • The severe lack of character development and substantial overarching story
  • The complete idiocy and laziness of the Sentai footage being used with Sentai only suits included
  • More horrible acting from Andrew Gray as Troy
  • The tremendous missed opportunity with the Legendary powers and Super Mega mode
  • Horrifying lack of backstory on the legendary powers/ranger keys
  • Senseless, wasted cameos by previous rangers and characters on the show
  • Repetitive dialogue and insulting fan service with so much lack of care in it
  • More gratuitous hand out of zords

Best Episodes:
  1. "Silver Lining, Part 1 and 2"-Orion's debut at the 6th and Silver Ranger gives the show a momentary miracle of backstory and emotional resonance....even if it's soon underplayed by a whimsical montage of Emma and Gia picking out an outfit for him. -_-  Oh this show.....
  2. "Love Is In The Air"-What can I say??? Jake can be a fun character when given the spotlight and the fact Levira fell for him, not to mention protects him in the most over the top way made me chuckle A LOT!
  3. "All Hail Prince Vekar"-If there is one thing Super Megaforce lacked (Among a zillion other things! -_-) was a legit amount of stakes and threat.  Prince Vekar's minor victory over the rangers with the armada megazord actually added a bit of that but soon is destroy as easily as any other villain.  But it was a pretty entertaining ride until the end.
  4. "Spirit of the Tiger"-Literally the only tribute episode to a past season that holds weight and doesn't completely disrespect it.  Mostly because Jason Smith who played Casey helped write the episode......sigh.......Unbelievable!

Worst Episodes:
  1. "The Wrath/Legendary Battle"-I think it's fair to say these two episodes encompass EVERYTHING that's wrong with this show: lousy, embarrassing acting, cameos from past rangers that are so superfluous and empty, terrible use of Sentai footage, undermining the vast threat upon the rangers, writing that makes you want to dig into your brain, etc. Legendary is all the worst ways!!!
  2. "The Perfect Storm"-A whole episode wasted on the rangers chasing after an amnesiac Tensou instead of any kind of character development, plot movement or you know, actually playing tribute to the history of the show.  Waste of money, time and effort! -_-
  3. "In the Driver's Seat"-You'd think "RPM" was little more than your average season as Super Megaforce pays tribute to the world that nearly got decimated by a robot apocalypse by yelling at a zord and getting tricked by a villain that should be dead. WOW!
  4. "A Lion's Alliance"-Like Wild Force didn't need effort put into its tribute thanks to this episode that gets so much wrong about that show's lore it makes you want to hit your head against the screen.
  5. " Samurai Surprise"-Jayden and Mentor J couldn't have been more useless in this episode that depicts the rangers using more legendary modes aka Sentai only suits with absolutely no point to them! -_-

"After missing its mark with the thoroughly rushed and irritatingly irrelevant 20th season that was suppose to be the series' anniversary year, Super Megaforce, the 21st year that actually celebrates the show's history is a bunch of empty headed writers throwing things at a script with any cohesion or thought on how it can possibly make for even an adequate show for kids.  It fails as both an excitable introduction for new fans of the greater lore and world building of what came before and destroys any ounce of hope of respectable honoring of the show's 2 decade history at that point for long term fans. Super Mega WIN!??? My GOD!! Super MegaSave us of all!!!" O_O

Final Season Verdict: D-
