Season 10, Episode 6: Harvest
"Harvest"
Episode 6
Air Date: October 29th, 2010
What in the M. Night Shamalyan's "The Village" is going on here!??? O_O Or rather "The Village" meets "the Wicker Man"! And I mean the original 1970s classic religious horror flick, NOT the infamous Nicholas Cage remake that never ceases to amaze me was actually made AND released with serious intention! At least there was no scene of Clark crying out "Not the bees, Not the bees! AHHHHHHHHH!" o_O The episode as a whole is a big whole scare-fest with creepy vibes with not only Clark and Lois ending up in Children of the Corn land but Tess having to deal with the serious menace growing inside of little Alexander. But I love how the episode starts out so lighthearted by introducing a new dynamic to Clark and Lois' relationship now that she knows he's secret. I love everything from Clark answering her questions about previous weird events that have happened in Smallville that related to him to Lois being so gitty watching Clark use his super strength in front of her. Glad to see their unbelievable chemistry and priceless banter isn't going anywhere, tho there still seems to be some miscommunication with Clark wanting to keep her away from any anti-vigilante rallies which leads to them having a bit of fight. Gotta say I love the incredible location shots in this episode (we don't get many during this part of the series cause of budget reasons), especially seeing the lush, endless looking background of mountains in Vancouver....was this shot in Vancouver??? Looks like some other area in Canada for sure! O_o Then there's the Amish inspired small town that the little girl takes Lois too and it looks so quaint and authentic....before all hell breaks loose and Lois realizes she's the latest sacrifice in a town full of religious nutjobs! Yikes!
The blue kryptonite plot twist just seems to be there for plot convenience to keep Clark depowered for most of the episode but I would understand how years of drinking water contaminated by meteor rock would cause a far off town to go mad and want to preserve their crops by killing women who end up near them. Of course it's always great to see Clark and Lois work together, especially when they are trying to figure out a way to escape and Clark finds out Lois is the one who saved him when the blue k knife was stuck in him. Too bad they end up captured again and Clark brutally sliced in the stomach before being dug into the ground. Tho the distance in which he must be for his powers to come back was kind of inconsistent. I'd say Clark and Lois were a good 5-6 feet as they were running away so how didn't Clark's powers come back so they could superspeed away??? Tho I do find it funny when after Clark saved her, Lois uses the moment to scare the town back as far away from Clark so his powers can return and he can finally save them both by superspeeding away. But it was a creepy yet cute adventure for the two that helps bring them even closer together as Clark even entrusts Lois with Dr. Swan's journal before the two make sweet love in real time. WOW! What a beautiful scene! :)
But like I said, Clark and Lois aren't the only one who must face some terrifying new situation as while Tess is trying to protect and keep Alexander safe, one of her facility workers believes he could be a danger on top of him aging rapidly like all the other clones of Lex. Making matters worse, Alexander begins exhibiting extremely disturbing behavior by drawing the symbol of the Blur and being driven by Lex's memories as well as hatred for Clark. How chilling and cold was that scene of Tess trying to reach the young boy but him becoming increasingly aggressive and menacing until he declares himself to be Lex Luthor. I'm not surprised how shaken and traumatized Tess was after all this to the point that she destroys an antidote to cure Alexander of his rapid aging and would rather lock him away back at Cadmus to keep the world safe from Lex Luthor. Also, that last scene of Alexander shaving his head bald and cracking a vicious smile is just.....YIKES!!! O_O Harvest maybe mostly filler but it has enough of a horrific atmosphere and sense of stakes to remain engaging alongside the overarching story with young Lex clone becoming more of a threat than a product of Lex that Tess can't seem to save. Sad.....:(
Final Kryptonite: C+
