Season 10, Episode 15: Fortune
"Fortune"
Episode 15
Air Date: February 25th, 2011
Shockingly, even tho the writers of Smallville clearly ran out of ideas again this week with another movie knock-off, this time, the most recent success of the Hangover franchise, Fortune still manages to be one of, if not the most hilarious comedic episodes the series has ever done. WOW!!! Who would have thought the writers could breath new life into a concept that had already been done well on big screen but thanks to some unforgettable character interactions and some of the genuine funniest scenes I have ever seen on this show, Fortune rocks!!! I like the idea of Zatanna hexing Clark and Lois' champagne present for their joined bachelor/bachelorette party (Are those even a thing??? lol) before the morning after where the characters wake up in the most bizarre and unexplained circumstances while trying to piece together what happened the night before. I actually loved seeing each set of paired characters having to deal with the fallout after the drunken night of no memory, like Clark waking up to a lemur eating food on top of him with Chloe in a cheap wedding dress in his closet while Lois wakes up next to Oliver on some train tracks with some homeless person switching shoes with her. HAHAHAHA! It's especially hilarious since it's nice that Zatanna put a spell on the champagne as it allows Clark to join in on the drunken/hangover hijnks, especially the funniest scene I have ever seen when he does he's usual superspeeding off to save the day but runs into a wall instead. OMG!!!! I'm crying!!!
Also, another highlight is Tess and Dr. Emil being paired off together and having one hell of a night as Metropolis' newest karaoke sensation as Elvis and his singing partner during a humorous reveal scene of them at the Ace of Clubs entertaining bar goers even the morning after. Honestly, I think my most favorite part of the episode is seeing Tess and Dr. Emil paired off, especially toward the end when he reveals he hasn't had that much fun since he's wife died. Emil hasn't gotten much focus since becoming a a more prominent character since last season and I'm glad the writers are at least trying to give him some needed depth before the show is. The chemistry between him and Tess is not only so adorable and cute, but Alessandro Juliani is a tremendously gifted actor with too much range that makes it work so well. Omg, the last footage caught of Emil and Tess hooking up in their office......Jesus Christ Smallville who knew the writers had it in them to be so unexpected and have the best comedic timing??!!! HAHAHAHAH!
The main story revealing the gang ending up in the crossheirs of DC villain Amos Fortune works, especially when the episode finds them in his casino for the climatic battle. Who would have thought you'd ever seen Oliver in drag, fighting off a bunch of thugs while Chloe dual wields some pistols (again!? O_o) and Lois frantically searching for her engagement ring during all the chaos of it. This is the writers seriously having some fun with the show before the doors of Smallville close for good. Honestly, the final moments of the episode is too surreal and bittersweet. I don't think the characters on this show have ever been so happy and full of smiles in all ten seasons of this show! WOW! But after all the years of teenage angst, adult melodrama and tumultuous relationships, I'm glad the writers were able to get the cast to just have fun and enjoy their final days on set by just having a great time. It's a great break from the season's main arc, especially after last episode's dark journey through dead bodies and temptation with Desaad. Fortune is a heartwarming yet contagiously laugh out loud comedy that makes for a nice mini-adventure away from the looming threat of Darkseid's continued corruption of humanity. Oh, it even manages to wrap up Chloe's storyline on the show. Not only will she be moving to Star City as an undercover journalist by day but she will be helping superheroes in their ascension like she did with Clark. And she's married to Oliver.....but who cares when the show FINALLY references Batman and Wonder Woman via Chloe's globe trotting while she was away this season. Now, THAT'S awesome and great twist! :)
Final Kryptonite: A+
