Season 7, Episode 7: Wrath
"Wrath"
Episode 7
Air Date: November 8th, 2007
Oh boy.....well at least the writers are clearly self aware of how dumb and contrived this show can be with its leading lady since Season 1. Hard to believe Clark's high school sweetheart from the comics has been given such a siginificant role for sooo long on this series but at what cost tho. Sure in the comics, Lana Lang goes on to be more than just cheerleader who was the first love of Clark Kent but the dreaded Insect Queen (if you can believe it!) and has even shared the title of Superwoman with Lois Lane. But honestly, her relevance and story on Smallville ended after the high school years and her part of the show is starting to feel like stretching out something that desperately shouldn't be here anymore on this show at this point. The funniest thing about this episode (and NO, it's not that increibly goofy, over the top, "are you kidding me?!" moment of Clark and Lana having supersex that cause literal tremors in Smallville -_-), it's that everyone clearly sees that Lana is unhinged, can't be trusted and needs to stay the absolutely hell away from Clark....except of course, Clark himself. -_- There are multiple scenes of characters telling Clark how bad Lana has become and naive he's being for trusting her since she faked her own death, not to mention returned to Smallville to live the simple farm life with Clark like nothing happened during her tumultuous marriage with Lex.
After a stunning horse riding sequence, Lana is immediately given Clark's powers, but only reduced portion since Clark still has his abilities (Seriously, how does that work? It's never explained but does that mean Clark's powers are weaker??? O_o Didn't look like it watching the episode! Seems more like his powers were duplicated but whatever.) I just find it funny how the episode starts off like some outlandish comedy before quickly and almost rushing into this dark deconstruction of who Lana has become as of late considering what's she been through with Lex as well as Clark. Now I get Lana's need for revenge and immediately going after Lex for it since she's been spying on him through her Isis Foundation that officially introduced last episode. Lana is clearly obsessed with vengeance but also is a troubled woman who isn't coping with all that she's been through. Yes, the main argument is because of what Lex did to her but I like how even Clark's actions in the past have made her so untrustworthy of him that she's hiding all this from only him. But the worst part about it is how Clark is handling it and how his clear infatuation with the girl next door for the past 6 years is dangerously clouding his judgement from who Lana may actually be. The entire episode is Clark just making excuses when people reveal more and more about how messed up Lana has become. Even before getting her powers, she faked her death, captured and tortured Lionel was weeks maybe months, is spying on Lex but all Clark can do is blame other people and especially himself for what she has become. Oh my god!!! -_- It's this kind of insipid writing that it's no wonder the original showrunners left after this season and the writers know the show has become completely stationary because of how dense Clark is in his decision making, especially when it comes to Lana.
Even at the end of the episode, Lana is aware that Clark is merely in love with this perfect image he made of her for so long and doesn't want to taint that image by blaming himself for her going on terminator on Lex. I'm just saying, this is an absolute low point for Clark on the show and his story at large as Lana truly is the only thing holding him back from being proactive and logical when lives are in danger. If that wasn't bad enough, Lois and Grant Gabriel finally become an item and it's just so forced. Lois deserves better (not Clark at the moment! :P) instead of this frat boy trying to be the big boss. It just reeks of giving her a story when Lois could be with actual men you can see her with. Yeah, Grant is more than just Lois' new love interest and is secretly hiding having connections with the Luthors but all is not being said right away but the reveal is more "WTF!?" than "OMG! No way!" Ewwwww, Wrath is a bad episode because it reinforces everything that was wrong with the show at this point from Clark's complete inability to make Lana accountable for ANYTHING and how seriously it damages her character to Lana herself being needlessly dragged through this series for the sake of drama and keeping Clark bound to the farm to get through more relationship issues instead of actively saving the world. Ewwwwww!!! :(
