Season 7, Episode 11: Siren

"Siren"
Episode 11
Air Date: February 7th, 2008

Ewwwwwww, it's such a shame that Smallville never really got ALL of their adaptions of certain DC heroes right off the bat. -_-  I remember the trailer for Siren back in the day and how awesome the set up was for Black Canary's debut, especially how epic her iconic canary cry sounded.  Yet, in the actual episode, instead of her usual ultra sonic scream, we get a sub-sonic yell that sounds more like a cruise liner signaling to dock on the side of the coast!!! -_-  Lame!! I mean the cry's effect looks awesome visually but the sound of it! Pretty much why we love her power, is absolutely GONE!??? WHAT!?!?? Also, her initial outfit on the show is pretty dumb.  They got the fishnets right but the short hair do with the painted on black mask??? -_-  Emmmmmm, looking back, it just didn't work for me.  As for the actress herself, Aliana Huffman is a bit too stiff and shaky in the role, but that has to do mostly with her horrible introduction at the start of the episode where wirework is clearly being used to show her amazing agility.  The way she moves and lands just looks so fake and forced! Gah! When she's playing Dinah Drake tho, she does seem more relaxed and genuinely confident so maybe it was the utter discomfort of playing Canary for the first time??? O_o

But outside of the BC stopping by Smallville to make her presence heard (puns away! :P), we have two side stories will lingering feelings and relationship woes as Oliver returns to Metropolis, leaving Lois to confront her old feelings for him while........Clark and Lana are still dealing with the fallout of her CHEATING on him and NOT being able to tell him apart from an evil, murdering duplicate that was pretending to be him for A WHOLE MONTH! Of course, I'm gonna start with Lois and Oliver because it's about the only thing I truly liked about the episode.  Tho it does make Lois seem kind of heartless going from breaking up with Grant to wanting Oliver back what seems to be overnight! Ummmmm does she know he was murdered??? O_o  I mean i NEVER liked their hooking up to begin with but I thought she actually had some sort of feelings for him but NOPE.  Soon as she sees Oliver, it's all leering at his hot abs while trying to resist the urge to kiss him but does so anyway because she's too hott and bothered! -_-  At least thanks of Black Canary tracking down the Green Arrow, Lois learns that Oliver is in fact Green Arrow this time and I actually thoroughly enjoyed how it not only developed Lois' character but explore her issues with the men she loves having a "dual identity" by saving the world at the same time.  It's truly heartbreaking but completely understandable for Lois.  Both her scenes with Oliver and especially Clark toward the end were so heartfelt and beautifully done.  Such great work by Erica, maybe even some of her best work yet on the show and the clever set-up with her finally being able to do the dual identity thing when Clark is Superman is done very nicely. :)

...............So I'm stalling right now..............*breathes in and out*.........OK........FINE!!! Let's talk about Clark and Lana for the billionth time as their relationship once again reaches the depths of pain and suffering for not only them but the viewers who were forced to watch this endless unintentional comedy of a relationship has been dragged to death even in the show's 7th season.  The funny thing is.....the episode was the PERFECT set-up for these two to finally realize " Yeah, this isn't gonna work." and break up mutually.  This season so far has even been hilariously showing why Lana ISN'T the one for Clark and should stay away from him.  To truly cement that abundantly clear statement from the writers, the whole Bizarro one month love fest was a complete betrayal of Clark in SOOOO MANY LEVELS this isn't even funny anymore.  It's pathetic and too sad for words.  Clark is finally put in a position to hate Lana and see that she clearly DOESN'T love him.  Finally when the two talk about the many elephants in the room, Clark stands his ground and puts Lana in her place when her "argument" for sleeping with his evil alien specter that was wearing his body like favorite costume is the most transparent pieces of dialogue I have ever heard on this show.  Lana, even KNOWING CLARK'S SECRET, has shown she isn't capable of being his ride or die, the soulmate he's been longing for all his life, yada, yada.  Honestly, after all her doomed relationship, Lana seems like she's in no place to be in love with anyone, especially AFTER Lex so why even bother with this relationship for a THIRD TIME!!! -_-  .....But alas in the end, Clark's mental capacity to let go is about as strong as butter being pressed against an steam iron.  "I don't want this to end" he says!  And the reasons for him wanting to stay in a relationship were when he was an adolescent teenager, NOT a grown woman who should know far better after everything she's been through but then that would make Clark look smart and we can't have that yet! :) *Calls a firing squad*  .......Huh......... This show man.  I love it, I hate it, I love to hate it, I hate to love it, sometimes all four at once like this episode.  Siren should have worked far better than it did but it leaves so much to be disappointed by except some amazing catharsis from Lois. :(
