Season 15, Episode 18: Out of Luck
"Out of Luck"
Episode 18
Air Date: July 9th, 2007
I guess this is interesting but only for a reason that is because we get some heavy unforeseen foreshadowing from Mr. Hartford and Spencer about Mack when he becomes cursed by the very Paedra Aztec Del Compass that Moltor stole from the rangers at the end of last episode. Moltor gets the idea to use it against the rangers by giving it to Blothgaar, an old servant/ally who he wants to curse the rangers to keep them from getting involved in their search for the third jewel. But the thing about the episode is that the rangers clearly get cursed together but apparently Mack was the only one effected because he got more of the blast....which is bullsh!t but whatever, I can't keep expecting the writing to make sense and be beyond mediocre effort at this point. The things is, it's all played for laughs and I'm all for comedy but my goodness, this some serious abusing of absurdity that even Power Rangers should be ashamed of. Mack literally looks like a Looney Toon character breaking things and things just falling all over him out of nowhere like the globe from the underground base to a freakin' humongous crane that falls on him that he only survives by morphing.....uhhh huh....O_O Now I'm all for slapstick but my goodness did these gags get so infuriatingly irritating after a while. Was the Sentai episode this is adapted from just as obnoxiously goofy like this??? Even I doubt that and Japan LOVES this type of outlandish and random as hell wackiness! O_o
Also, once again, we have a ranger who doesn't believe in something being true in such an over the stop sci-fi/fantasy universe that I just wanted to hit Mack over the head. This could be another case of them being prideful and stubborn but come on, I'm not going over an entire rant again about how ANYTHING can be real on this show so.....SHUT UP!!! -_- Also, the whole good luck charms part of the episode with the rangers just made me....ummmm....I just don't care for this type of humor especially when it makes absolutely no sense for someone like Ronnie to own a disgusting pair of socks she hasn't watched in 5 years!!! Hey, now that's something that's completely unrealistic for this show, HA!!! Oh and I find it hard that Dax would have any type of good luck charm when he such an obnoxious hazard waiting to happen in personality! -_- Hey but maybe that's why he cares it around. Also, Tyzonn and his lucky flower....ummm...where does he keep that thing and where has he been keeping??? O_o And if that wasn't the worst of it then we get an absolutely preposterous final fight between Mack and Moltor with Blothgraar as they open the crevice that has the power to lead to the next jewel. Of course, it's filled with the trademark, over the top explosions of this era of the show but mad even more eye popping by the unfathomable idiocy of Mack wearing all the good luck charms...while morphed. All I'm saying it's not good when the villains are literally taunting and making fun of your heroes for legitimate reasons because you look so embarrassing. Like Lothor level embarrassing!!! Not Good! O_o
Not to mention, the sequence of Mack's lucky charms (You'll NEVER steal my!!! :P) helping him in his one on one fight against Blothgraar......unintentional hilarity has never been so unintentional to the point I felt the writers were not sober during the writing in this episode and went wild without any sense of knowing what an actual joke is suppose to do! Of course, this complete bullsh!t works and Mack is able to get that massive compass as Rose is able to reverse the bad luck on Mack. But these aren't over yet as Moltor forces Blothgraar to grow...by kicking him into the glowing crevice they just opened.....ok??? O_o Anyway, the rangers summon their megazords and combine forces against Blothgraar; even using the compass again to curse him with bad luck. SERIOUSLY!!! He doesn't believe in bad luck either after cursing someone with it and seeing that said person being curse by it...I just...WHAT!!!? O_O But like I said, despite an episode of complete and utter dreadful hijinks and disbelieving disbelief, the Mack foreshadowing between Hartford and Spencer is really intriguing, even chilling! It really is being handled so well what's about to be revealed to us but the ongoing storyline this season with its meandering, thoughtless characters and jarring villain motivations, there has been worse but this is definitely NOT. GOOD either! O_O
