Season 23, Episode 12: Catching Some Rays
"Catching Some Rays"
Episode 12
Air Date: September 10th, 2016
.....Only this show could you have a team of superheroes facing off an ancient monster that turns out to be...some tropical island themed creature who has the power to use the sun and make everyone on earth want to take a vacation if they are in the sunlight. You know, I feel like Power Rangers has come to accept the overt wackiness and over the top comedy of the original Sentai because this is just so odd, bizarre and damn right campy. But it's honestly....a very fun kind of camp instead failing at the camp and just being horrible. The cast once again do wonderful with the material, especially when the team sans Koda and Ms. Morgan are hit by the spell and starting having fun for a good chunk of the episode. Never thought a script could be so genuinely campy but all the funnier for it because of the execution. From Poisandra and Curio wanting to go vacation with the rangers to steal their energems but getting in over their heads by the rangers' obnoxious fun to the rangers taunting Fury and another monster with their energems as a game to make them look stupid, etc. It just strangely comes off as actually entertaining and fun to watch. Not to mention, Riley almost getting blasted by the monster and just saying "Cool." so casually is priceless. Michael Caber sold that moment perfectly. :)
As for Koda and Ms. Morgan, they are busy trying to reverse the monster's spell aka Leisure (Makes sense!) as Koda tries to figure out how his grandfather apparently trapped and beat this monster 100,000's of years ago. I actually really did like the beginning mystery of Koda going back to his cave with rangers and them discovering the tomb his father trapped the rangers in. Tho they seriously should have listened to said warning! -_- Now the entire world is bathing in a sunlight that making every want to have fun instead of being serious and working. Luckily, we have another character this episode to help Koda and Ms. Morgan figure out how to build a device that will reverse the spell on everyone when Kendall's grandma Betty comes by for a visit. Considering she's the one who found the giant ancient lens, they figure she can help them complete it and she does by....putting a piece of her glasses' lens on the device they built. As absurd as it sounds, it actually works when all the people in the restaurant return to normal. While Koda tries to hold off Fury and Lesiure's brother, Loafer (Yes, his brother just happened to be one of Sledge's old bounties! LOL) while Kendall goes off into space with the Plesio Zord to stop Leisure. While Koda is getting his ass kicked by being outnumbered, the rest of the team shows up to his utter joy and timing....only to morph and start hula dancing with Loafer. "Dino Supercharge Vacation!" ......On on this show! Smdh.....O_O
Anyway, after a pretty cool space battle as Kendall destroys Leisure, she uses the device to reverse the spell on the world as the rangers return to normal. With Tyler's T-Rex Supercharge mode and the rest of the team combining forces, they destroy Loafer. Wow, it's been a while since we haven't had a megazord battle to end the last monster but than again we did with Kendall and the Pleiso Charge Megazord so. Tho I love the next bit with Heckyl forcing Poisandra and Curio to clean the entire ship due to their "plan" to vacation with the rangers and get their energems. LOL The Vivix going off to Hawaii instead! Lastly, we get major plot movement with the mysterious Silver Ranger again, especially when he mentions the "Dark Energem" which was made out of darkness unlike the 10 energems that were made out of goodness. So it's EVIL!!! O_o Suddenly, the Silver Ranger needs all the zord data to help him prevent the dark energem from reaching Earth. Very suspicious; clearly indicating something is absolutely not right with the Silver Ranger but Kendall does so anyway when Keeper tells her the dark energem is too dangerous for them NOT to take the risk. Uhhhh ohhhh....this can't be good! O_O While the episode tries to force some message children listening to their grandparents, "Catching Some Rays" (LOL even the title!) works in such a way that it is campy, charming and infectious in terms of the story and tone it is going for. It's so silly and outlandish, it's good! I don't get it!!! o_O Yet it even managed to still continue building on the Silver Ranger storyline with lots of intrigue and suspense. No words! LOL *Shrugs*
