Season 14, Episode 2: Broken Spell, Part 2

"Broken Spell, Part 2"
Episode 2
Air Date: February 20th, 2006

Staring where Part 1 left off, Koragg is in no mood for games as he tells Udonna and the teens to get up to prepare to fight.  Of course, Xander tries to reason with him again, but Koragg just summons a largehorse zord named Catastros and does a spell to make himself grow as well as form a Centaur type megzord with Catastros.  With the rangers wihtout their magic wands...yeah, they shouldn't have left those behind huh??? O_o  Udonna takes on Koragg by morphing once again and making herself grow through a spell as well.  Hey that rhymed! :)  The two battle while Chip gets all excited about the sight of a real Centaur, seriously Chip, what's the deal?? Even Justin was never this excited all the time!! O_o   Unfortunately, Koragg is too powerful for Udonna and defeats her in battle as snow begins to fall.  Sheep Claire notices this and hurries to Udonna's aid...by just leaving Nick there...the f&*#?  As Udonna returns to her normal size and demorphs, he snow staff falls to ground as Koragg takes it for his current victory as he wants to leave it as some kind of warning for the rangers.  Uhhh huh...you could finish them right there but let them have the chance to harnass their powers and morph later! O_o  Anyway, while Morticon tries to get the snow staff from Koragg as they talk about "The Master", Udonna brings the rangers back to Root Core just as Claire the sheep arrives.  After Udonna turns her back to normal, she gives the teens back their magic wands but realize it's not exactly conspicuous.  Udonna then uses a spell to transform the wands into cell phones aka their Mystic Morphers.  With them, they will not only be able to morph but learn "spell codes" that will help harnass more power over time.  Realizing they need to start heading back, the teens exit the dimension through "the trees" as Udonna tells them they will be their access in and out of the dimension.  I find it funny how Tobey clearly sees them come out of the tree but the teens just brush it off before he tries to do the same. lol

Meanwhile, while Morticon rallies the forces of the underworld for another attack, Nick back in front of the store, fixing his back.  We get a sweet if not awkward scene between him and Madison as she can't help but ask him to stay.  Nick declines of course, as he has to take off and go to his family's place since he's use to moving around a lot.  Uhh huh....still don't believe in magic huh??? -_-  Anyway, back at Root Core, Udonna and Claire talk about the fact that the Xenotome (yeah, it's an ancient magic book that tells them "all that they don't know"....so does the information just vanish after they know it???) told of 5 warriors, but Nick clearly doesn't want to be apart of it.  As we get some bonding between Claire and Udonna about Claire's insecurities about her magic wielding, she wonder why they are giving up on Nick so soon.  I mean, the guy doesn't believe in magic when he saw some of the most magical, otherworldy stuff ever so, not really Udonna's fault, Claire. O_O Doesn't stop Udonna from confronting Nick in the mortal world by trying to convince him to stay and that there is a reason he's here.  She reveals he is suppose to be the leader of the rangers considering he's the one who offered to help the old man (Who Udonna reveals it was her in disguise)  Soon the other rangers leave the store to head back to the magic dimension as Udonna tells Nick there's trouble.  Nick once again declines as Udonna disappears.  Back in the other dimension, the teens arrive in...sigh...Hogwarts like attire before an army of Hidiacs appear to fight them.  The four try their best to fight them, doing a much better job than last time but clearly not strong enough to defeat them on their own.  Xander quickly suggest they "ranger up!" (That's a new one! lol) as the teen rip off their cloaks and call out "Magical Source, Mystic Force".

The Mystic Force morph sequence.... yeah....no words O_O...like who they hell is the guy announcing their powers during it.  I guess considering this is a magic based theme, I get the whole spells part of the morph but it feels kind of cheap to me to be honest.  Unlike the morph sequence, I absolutely LOVE the Mystic Force suit.  Once again, the design is so original and inventive, with a team of rangers having capes apart of their uniforms.  Really adds to the magic feel and make these set of rangers so much more distinct then previous.  With their new powers, the 4 continue to fight the Hidiacs...while making some weird shockwave effects come out of no where....in SLOW....MOOOOO!  o_O  We then get introduced to their primary weapons aka their Magi-Staff that they use to summon their individual element powers as well as transforming into a crossbow for Chip and an axe for Xander! Neat! :)  But soon Koragg arrives and the four rangers are overwhelmed as he's too powerful for them.  Apparently, Nick has a vision of them being owned in battle and finds his way back to the dimension by hopping off his motorcycle mid-air to power kick Koragg away.  Random, yet it amazes me how the production team in New Zealand can pull off such impressive and expensive stunts like these.  Anyway, Nick all of a sudden believes in magic since his new friends were in danger and he gets cool new Hogwarts training uniform too. He morphs and becomes the Red Mystic Ranger as Koragg sends another round of Hidiacs to stop him.  We get a combination of weird Sentai footage with Nick turning a Hidiac into a giant ball to fire at the foot soldiers as well as those Kalishplosions that have already warn out their welcome.  Nick finishes them off with his Magi-Staff that turns into a sword and uses the power of the Phoenix to destroy them.  As the rangers cheer and do some weird hand in the middle thingy, Koragg swears this won't be the last battle as the 5 do a badass team walk in slomo! The episode wraps with the 4 teens excited about the future while Nick hangs with them.  They use their new powers to clean the store before Tobey comes as he is once again amazed by how clean the store is.  We also get introduced to another character named "LeeLee" who clearly has immediate attraction to Nick as she's new in town and wants him to show her around.  Yeah, the new guy in town showing the new girl in town around! Ha!  Oh and the other teens suggest Tobey to hire Nick pretty much against his will.  How nice! Anyway, "Broken Spell" was a fine two parter I guess even tho I feel the show a bit weak in terms of set up of the magic theme and characterizations are jarring as well as need time to be more defined.  Koragg is about as standard villain general as they come as Morticon and Necroli have yet to make an impression.  Entertaining but empty overall. :(

Final Morph: C+
