Season 11, Episode 21: Good Will Hunter
"Good Will Hunter"
Episode 21
Air Date: June 28th, 2003
You know, Ninja Storm can be utterly jarring sometimes considering you have a cast that features probably the most likable and realistic (for this show anyway!) group of teenagers to ever become Power Rangers with distinct personalities, genuinely heartwarming relationships as well as plausible flaws in each of them that feels right and earned since the show began....juxtaposted...to a group of villains that are honestly making me prefer Divatox and her submarine full of idiot Space Pirates. Yes!!! The same season about car powered rangers and Elgar as the main general has better or more entertaining villains than Lothor and his collection of mindbogglingly stupid generals. His nieces are brain dead superficial idiots, Zurgane, the general who actually showed the most promise and focus on defeating the rangers to begin with, suddenly has become as laughable as the pathetic boss he serves and Lothor....ohhh Lothor....I'm saving a special place in my overview for my relentless rant on the joke that is Lothor so far....I mean...WOW!!! O_O
So the main storyline this episode is Hunter playing big brother to some kid who loss his father. But this potentially touching material is instead reduced to almost subplot like presentation for the episode as the majority of the episode has Marah and Kapri desperately trying to track down their Uncle's PAM (That remote control that makes monsters grow) since they traded it to someone in the city over the internet....I just.....-_- Sooooo, instead of, you know, developing this story or even Hunter for that matter, we get this dumb hijinks of a story and I just can't even by that some kid would think that Lothor's PAM was a game. I mean..HUH??!! Since when is pushing random buttons on a device considered a game!!? Not the brightest kid in the bunch is he???! O_O Also, his mother doesn't question this new toy or try to take it from him??? Ok....... I mean the randomness of Charlie using the remote and forcing the rangers to battle an endless mob of Kelzacks is pretty entertaining but then you have the creation of the DJ Dummond monster and I just ask...WHY??? o_O Not much of a monster of the week but it gives us a decent final zord battle as usual so it can't hurt.
But I can't get over the utter disrespect to the main plot by having these subpar villains look stupid for the sack of a few (horrible! -_-) laughs!!! Sure we got a nice brotherly moment between Hunter and Blake but it was so short lived as we got more scenes of Kapri and Marah being scared off by a freakin' 8 year old kid???!! Yes, Marah and Kapri, as dumb and vapid as they are, can put up a decent fight against the rangers, yet get quickly intimidated by a little boy about to perform some karate on them! ....OUR villains this season, ranger fans!!! You have got to be kidding me!!! -_- Oh and there was some other B plot about the rangers wanting to record themselves for some competition but it honestly was even more inconsequential to the episode so it's not really worth getting into detail over. It just sucks that out of a potentially heartwarming and character exploring episode centered on Hunter, it rarely does and all we get is Charlie is into martial arts like Hunter and they share a connection with losing parents that's briefly talked about before the episode ends on competition narrative. Yeah....filler and forgettable fluff!!! :(
