Season 5, Episode 10: Fanatic
"Fanatic"
Episode 10
Air Date: January 12th, 2006
Meh! I suppose I should be thankful that this overall storyline with the Senate Race is being pushed forward but I just can't help but be soooo unimpressed by an arc episode within the story being just yet another deranged psycho episode. I mean it's not completely out of the norm (especially for this show! O_o) to have some overzealous, obsessed....well zealots after someone or someone that opposes someone that they are completely enamored by. Of course, Lex being the potential corrupting monarch of Kansas inspires some Central Kansas fans to become far more than loyal voters but erratic new foes for Jonathan who will do anything to secure Lex's State Senate victory! I gotta give the casting director some immense credit for giving Annie Burgstede the role of radical Lex leader, Samantha Drake, as she really does give a genuinely creepy, completely out of her mind performance that really does make look do a double take and wonder if the actress herself maybe insane too. But the writing here does absolutely nothing new with a story we've seen so many times before on this show with some infatuated, unhinged individual on a mission to kill someone for some greater good. It's just been done far better in the previous 4 seasons and just feels like been there done that...Clark coming in at the very last moment for a supersave and that's it! Conflict solved so quickly that it seemed more like an inconvenience than a actual threat! o_O
Also, it doesn't help that the Clark and Lana relationship drama is brought up...or should I say brought down to a new unbearable low with Clark once again hiding the truth from her and playing all defensive when she wants no secrets between them. Add in the fact that they haven't had sex since he got his powers back, a painfully awkward conversation with Chloe about the...uhhh..."issue"....and no real reason to hide the truth from Lana....I just.......why put the fans/viewers through more of this unnecessary, after-school special drama of romance!!??? Enough already!!! Since like the 3rd season!!! Just stop! And Clark's reasoning behind hiding the truth from her is becoming the dumbest padding out of hiding his secret from someone yet. Even Chloe is like, "the girl is studying astrology and probably would be more inclined to be comfortable with you being an alien than I am dude!" Also, the whole being blamed for the meteor shower crap is getting old! So you crash landed on Earth during the meteor shower! Doesn't mean you caused it dude! Not even the second time....well....actually....O_o lol. Not to mention, you have saved Lana's life numerous times the past 4 going on 5 years....I don't think she'd look at you like some monster but some miracle savior in her life and LOVE YOU MORE FOR IT! GAH!!!! *Head concrete* *Head lamp* *Head anywhere solid* -_-
We also get some plot movement with Jonathan's side of the race with Lois being hilariously appointed his campaign manager....even tho she's like 20 right??? O_o But Martha also being tempted by Lionel who offers her more money to help keep Jonathan's campaign going. While it's a bit iffy that Martha would accept Lionel's help (Ummm did she already forget that time Lionel possessed her son's body???! O_o), I'm more intrigued by Lionel and how much he knows about Clark at this point. He has been acting more than bizarre and mysterious since he's been appointed Jor-El's vessel in Hidden but the writers aren't making it clear if he does in fact know about Clark's secret as well as knows he's being used as an anchor for a Kryptonian A.I.??? O_o But it does set up some future drama as Martha accepts his offer...but at what cost??? :( While I admired the writers making Jonathan's convictions clear about staying in the race, it's clear it's taking tremendous toll on his health as a scene reveals him taking some kind of pills....oh boy! O_o Also, the episode ends with Lana making it clear she's closer to Clark's secret than one again, he is giving her credit for...but it's gonna be dragged out to the end's of the earth and back so. Ewwwwww!!! My love/hate relationship with this show returns! -_- lol
