Season 3, Episode 7: Magnetic

"Magnetic"
Episode 7
Air Date: November 13th, 2003

Awwww and things were going soooooo well before the writers decided to bring us back to typical Smallville with some meteor freak of the week after our small town beauty queen, Lana Lang! Ehhhhh, I know that Lana Lang is suppose to be Clark's high school sweetheart but the writers are already taking this into extremely disturbing proportions when every guy or girl with powers seems to be helplessly in love with her while wrecking havoc in Smallville.  It only gets so much worse from here but let's just talk about the latest in the "I love Lana" meteor freak series in Seth. The latest high school junior with the hots for Lana Lang and gains the ability to control metal like freakin' Magneto Jr. after some a-hole smashes his head with a snow globe with meteor rock fragments in it.  Of course, he gains superpowers! You know the drill.  But honestly, the episode falls into the same type of story we've already seen dozens of times already at this point in the show.  Lana becomes a target, Clark is all suspicious and right but Lana can't see it for some reason (At least this time she's under Seth's literally control of the magnetism....har har! :P), Clark soon proves he's right to Lana but it is too late and he has to save her from said meteor freak.  Ewwwww, it's just so cut and dry.  At least the writers should try to make these meteor freak stories more complex and standout but it seems it's just a crouch the showrunners feel waaayyy too comfortable with rehashing so much.

I mean, poor Clark.  Once again forced to look like the jealous boyfriend, or should I say jealous EX-boyfriend now trying to protect Lana from Seth by following her and making accusations that just leads to Lana putting him down relentlessly.  EHHHHHHH again! -_- At least this time, Lana payed for being wrong and not was arrested but has to spend time doing community service. But the writers just can't help themselves by continuously making Clark look like the loser for not being with her and breaking off their relationship with Lana at the end coming to Clark about her eventually dating again and falling for the right guy.  Sure, she wants Clark to be that guy but she doesn't hold back from saying she wants to be loved again and Clark is going to have to deal with it if or when it happens.  Awwwww thanks Lana! Can't wait until you fall for yet another psycho after you that you need Clark to save your a$$ again! O_o At least Clark was able to take out Seth with his smarts and not his powers.  Electricity and magnetism going hand and hand by shocking Seth and attracting him to the metal he was controlling. :)

But honestly, despite the usual standard Smallville storytelling weaknesses, the sub-plot was actually chilling and masterful with Lex finding out from his detective friend that Chloe has been looking into Lionel's past as well.  It's nice for once that not only does Chloe get an interesting story arc for herself but is a target instead of the aggravating teen queen of unrequited love! I love how Lex immediately shows her that dealing with her father will get her killed, especially the shocking reveal of the detective being killed thanks to the information that was on the computer modem he stole from her office.  As scary as it maybe, it leads to a unforeseen alliance between Chloe and Lex, as Chloe reveals to him that his father and Morgan Edge use to be childhood friends, indicating that Lionel may in fact be behind the death of his parents.  Oooohhh boy! Things are heating up and getting good I tell you! But other than that, "Magnetic" is filler garbage with Clana angst right in the middle of pathetic as usual meteor freak plot with the only interesting bits being the suspenseful sub-plot that will propel the season even further in one of its best storylines of the series. :)
