Season 3, Episode 15: Resurrection
"Resurrection"
Episode 15
Air Date: February 25th, 2004
Resurrection sees to finally follow up on Jonathan's health issues that were shocking brought up at the end of Hereafter and only minor sub-plot during the pitiful trying to be too cool Velocity, but it juxtaposes it to a similar family health drama with Garrett and his older brother Vince. I gotta admit, both stories left me very engaged and tensed up, especially knowing that Jonathan's heart problems have gotten so bad that his doctor seriously recommends he do a triple bypass open heart surgery. It's really an emotionally heavy episode, not just because of the very possibility of losing Papa Kent so soon but watching Garrett and Clark try to find comfort in their mutual situations....only for Vince to tragically die right after the conversation. James Kirk was very young at the time yet I bought every scene that showed his deep connection with his brother, even before Vince's miraculous revival! You really feel bad for the kid and knowing he's lost his family, is going to be put in foster and has an uncle he doesn't even know overseas he barely or doesn't know??? O_O Jesus, it's no wonder he finally snaps when Vince some how confronts him alive and well...until his liver disease rapidly returns and he's back in the hospital. Yikes! He comes our lovable boy scout Clark ready to help Garret cope with his loss as well as tracking down what exactly happened to him after he died. It works as well for Clark as it helps keep his mind off of his father's potentially fatal surgery and focuses on him doing some good. The Kent family is the absolute heart of this show as usual and scenes like Clark begging his father to take the surgery as well as Jonathan and Martha having a heart to heart about letting Clark go when he's ready. Ehhhhhhh, I miss shows like this! The family drama with action packed moments between! The CW's newest Superman incarnation "Superman & Lois" is the first series since Smallville to market itself as such and I hope the show makes me fall in love with the Kents all over again like this show did. :_(
The mystery behind Vince's resurrection finally leads Clark to Dr. Teng's lab, where Lex apparently has been trying to find her since he started funding her project with the serum she made. Thanks to Chloe, he finds her and finds out she's been continuing her experiments under Lionel's watchful eye. Luckily, Clark manages to use his super hearing and super speed to overhear their conversation and still the serum to see if it will have the same effect on Vince as before. Meanwhile back at Smallville General, Garrett has finally had enough and holds the hospital hostage with explosive attached to his chest so that his brother will get a good liver and won't die a second time. Of course it's laced with kryptonite, we gotta have one at least each episode (the absolute prerequisite for this show at this point, it's not even funny anymore! O_O) I mean I know Smallville is littered all over with meteor rocks all over the town but my goodness, always convenient for conflict when Clark needs to save people on this show everytime! So Clark manages to have the Sheriff let him in the building to see Garrett but isn't taking chances as a sniper is prepared to take him out if Clark can't stop him. Jesus! It's here we officially learn (if not pretty obvious before) that the mysterious blood platelets in the serum is Clark's blood! But no time for that as for some reason, the serum won't work again; leaving Garrett setting his sights on his Clark's dad for the liver. Luckily and unfortunately, the sniper manages to stop Garrett in time, fatally killing him, while Clark must deal with the explosives that lead to an awesome superspeed sequence where we once again see how time freezes for Clark when he's moving so fast and manages to grab the bombs without the kryptonite effecting him to get it away from the hospital. Like I said, great action scene with effects that still look more polished than poorly aging.
Unfortunately, Vince isn't the only one in trouble as Adam is being kept or rather locked up in Teng's lab but clearly deteriorating at a tremendous speed since Lionel refused to continue the experiment on him. Yikes! Tho Lex keeping him there is pretty menacing in and of itself too...planning to do with him god knows what! O_O But I do enjoy the episode ends once again on a hopeful note with the Kents as Jonathan's surgery was successful and manages to give Clark advice about his blood being used to bring the dead back to life. It really is a shocking yet awesome concept that I really enjoyed the show adding to their own story of Superman's upbringing before taking flight. But we also get another in a long line of unnecessary scenes of Clark lying to Lana when she asked him a question. Jesus, we get it! They can't be together cause Clark ALWAYS has to cover his a$$ and doesn't trust her just as Lana realizes he's lying AGAIN while looking all disappointed and hurt. *Vomit* -_- Anyway :), like I said, the episode overall all was emotionally strong and promising in moving one of the season's most interesting storylines forward with some solid performances from the cast as usual as well as young guest star.
Final Kryptonite: B+
