Season 9, Episode 8: Idol

"Idol"
Episode 8
Air Date: November 13th, 2009

WOW! Who would have thought of all the DC characters to be featured on Smallville, the Wonder Twins would be done well and not completely tear down the show's integrity with their "Superfriends" antics.   I think what works is that they are apart of the story but NOT at the center of it as the Blur is now being seen as bumbling fool of a hero when his recent saves around the city make headlines for the terrible mistakes he is now making.  And it makes sense that with Clark's Blur persona growing bigger and more larger than life, especially now that he's branding his S-Shield all over Metropolis, that it would catch the eye of some superfans who are now misusing that symbol of hope for their own agenda to be as great as their hero.  Seventh Heaven's David Gallangher and Allison Scagliotte are surprising great as Zan and Jayna as they are only used when needed in terms of the story and luckily don't over stay their welcome.  The writers even managed to incorporate things like their pet money, Gleek and their catchphrase naturally without it being too corny or cheesy.  I love how they help Clark toward the end with saving Lois and that last scene with Clark as the Blur lecturing them on being real heroes instead of overzealous fans is yet another classic Superman moment.  Clark is just feeling more and more like the Man of Steel to be by really taking on that leadership role, especially inspiring more heroes to join the fight the right way.  Ahhhhh I love it! :)

Honestly, this episode is really all Lois and considering the consequence of her kiss with Clark leading her to really reevaluate her life that she would go to a psychiatrist for help is just plain hilarious.  But it makes sense as she is not only getting closer to Clark but is still hurt by the tremendous absence of the Blur not calling her anymore.  In another clever spin of the classic Lois/Clark/Superman love triangle, Lois doesn't know how to feel about either men to choose just one of them and is drain to both of them for different reasons.  Things get even more confusing when Lois finally takes the Blur's call and thanks to the Wonder Twins blunder again, Lois finds out Clark is the Blur!  It's shocking to see Lois find out so soon but I love how the writers handle her reaction the day after.  Erica is just such a treasure as Lois shows so many sides of her reaction from being so caught off guard but willing to get close to Clark for her to tell her to even mentioning at a live press conference that she knows the Blur to protect him from having to make himself public thanks to the villianous District Attorney Ray Sacks. Dylan Neal does a fine, if not gleefully too evil performance as the corrupt DA trying to become mayor of the city and will do anything to destroy the Blur's name, including having his men toss Lois off the Daily Planet roof! Ahhhh! O_O

It leads to a great scene tho with Clark trying to save Lois but Lois knowing he can't reveal his secret to the world and is willing to sacrifice herself after realizing how much of a true hero he is.  Ewwwww these two! *Tears of joy return* :)  But luckily thanks to the Wonder Twins actually helping for a change, Clark manages to save Lois without her knowing....but then the Blur calls her and Lois now believes the two men are support people again.  It's a shame because the following scene is just so heartbreaking with Lois revealing how easier it would be if the two were the same.  Ehhhhhh, damn tears! Go away! :( Tho it's soon revealed it was Chloe who saved Clark's secret from Lois....because she has cameras all over the city and has been monitoring the phone calls of Metropolis.  Of course, Clark is ready to go in but Chloe just justifies her insane, villainous invasion of privacy like a necessary evil.  Someone should have removed her character during the end of last season! I can't stand the insanity of this girl, what is wrong with her and no one is doing anything about it! -_-  But regardless, Idol continues the strongest run of episodes from this series in sooo very long! Even the flaws of the season are almost forgiveable given how tremendously well written the show is this year with no signs of unfortunate road blocks in the middle unlike last season's Lana wrap up. -_-  Dammit I said her name! *Headlamp* That last scene is effortless in Superman mythos with Clark breaking out the glasses to keep Lois off his scent (Ahhhh!!! :) and that follow-up kiss between them.  But uhh ohh, those terrifying nightmares of the future have now knocked her unconscious; setting up our mid-season finale!
