Season 16, Episode 6: Dance The Night Away
"Dance the Night Away"
Episode 6
Air Date: March 17th, 2008
Meh!!! The first episode to leave me more feeling like like a whole bunch of nothing happened or more what happened wasn't to my liking. I give the writers credit for using this episode to finally addressing the tension between Casey and Theo that has been present since the premiere episodes. Finally, let's out what has been bothering him about Casey so far and it's because he as well as Lily have been best friends for so long but her new friendship with Casey making him feel suddenly left out. I really enjoyed Theo and Casey finally coming to blows about their issues...verbally of course. Casey is sick of Theo putting him down for being the new guy while Theo is just upset cause he feels Casey is stealing his bestie away from him. I truly enjoyed that scene a lot, especially Lily coming out of no where to put them both and their place as their constant rivalry is getting in the way of saving the world, which is waaaayyyy more important! Really awesome moment that makes me love Lily!!! :) Of course, they both come to an understanding as Casey just wants to fit in and Theo has to accept that Casey is apart of their lives now, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Hell, even Fran comes off insightful about the three them being friends maybe a change but change can be a good thing! :) Also, the writers are hinting at an underlying romance between Theo and Lily which is very sweet and I love how Aljin Abella is playing Theo's denial about it....but clearly his true feelings are showing. But unfortunately, that's where the enjoyment of the episode ends for me as the show once again veers into the realm of over the stop slapstick and absurd storytelling.
The next two Five Fingers of Poison decide to team up against the rangers but it's done through some sudden obsessive affection where Toady wants to win Stingerella's love out of nowhere by trying to go after the rangers during a fight she has with them with the Rin Shi. Sure that sounds normal, but now Stingerella has taught the Rin Shi the ways of dancing and suddenly the rangers are beaten so easily by them. Yes, because the art of kung fu is NO MATCH for the likes of breakdancing and the latest moves all the kids are doing....I just!!! -_- So now Lily must teach Casey and Theo her awesome dance moves from early in the episode (which weren't great moves by any means, the hell! O_O) But in Power Rangers land, the moves Lily teaches the team lead them to an easy win and a major comeback as they are able to outfight the Rin Shi with their new moves....I am not kidding!!! Remember that episode of Wild Force when the rangers and citizens were forced dance like idiots because of a Flute Org or when Dischordia made the MMPR team dance to her ear bleeding music??? Who knew they could have beaten them if they embraced the art of silly a$$ dancing to save the day instead of other means, what were they thinking!??? -_- Also, the romance between Toady and Stingerella is beyond contrived and idiotic, especially Camella forcing them together to defeat the rangers. Whhhhyyy??? The plot just seems so forced just the make some outlandish comedy humorous but it just falls flat and even makes the villains look extremely incompetent as well as moronic despite being powerful enough to face off against the rangers. God, these Five Fingers of Poison are proving to be some laughable villains, especially when they rangers can defeat two of them now when they were suppose to be Dai Shi's strongest warriors! Blah!
I guess I should talk about the new weapon RJ makes for the rangers in the form in the Claw Cannon Blaster which they must charge before using it as Casey has to hold off the two monsters so Lily and Theo can charge it up before using it. Jesus, RJ talk about design flaw much??? A weapon that needs to be charged during battle is just wasting time as the villain can defeat the rangers or you know, destroy the city! Meh! Also, Dai Shi's been sitting on his behind so far this season and has the last Five Finger stay behind for his future plans. Not ragging on the main villain yet, it's just I want him to do more than bark orders and make threats toward his generals like Scorpius did (which got old and boring so fast! O_O) All and All, "Dance the Night Away" is a big misstep for me this season so far. The character interactions and especially development between the trio of rangers is admirable but the arc with these villains is proving to be extremely subpar and lacking. Also, the using dance moves to save the day is one of those things that make Power Rangers too silly for older audiences to enjoy despite being a kids show. Just saying! :(
