Season 13, Episode 16: Boom
"Boom"
Episode 16

I guess I'm suppose to have sympathy (maybe even empathy??? O_o) for Boom this episode given he has been shown to be the ultimate underdog of the S.P.D. team in terms of wanting to be a ranger but failing and ultimately becoming the test dummy (literally! O_o) for all the equipment that the rangers use during their missions once they are seen as complete functional. But the thing is, I liked Boom up to this point...in small doses....-_- I'm sorry, his self titled, character centered debut episode just wasn't enjoyable overall for me, unfortunately. I mean, it's doesn't help that Boom turns out to have not just lied to his parents but goes as far as to endanger not only his life, but the lives of the actual S.P.D. rangers during a fight scene featuring a Blue Head and some Krybots. Sure, this sequence was definitely meant to show Boom taking his charade too far and him paying the ultimate consequences by resigning from S.P.D. after realizing he was wrong...BUT....it still doesn't excuse the initial buffoonery behavior in trying to impress his very gullible and seriously naive parents. I mean, I know this show was playing things up for laughs but did they REALLY think Boom was not only a ranger but the damn leader of the team with that many pathetic attempts at training and especially fighting?!! Even his laughable Orange ranger suit was a clear indication that this is all BIG FAT LIE?!!! -_- Also, while Syd, Bridge and especially Z's efforts to make Boom's ranger duties seem truthful, they nobody but themselves to blame as well for taking it as far as he did. But Boom is their friend and they really wanted to make him feel love and adored by his parents so I digress....only a teeny, weeny bit! o_O
Also, the sub-plot with Jack and Sky facing off against one of Grumm's latest monsters, Tomars (Yeah....o_o) as he sends them to multiple locations around New Zealand....I mean multiple dimensions just grew tired and dull...FAST!!! Seemed like just a reason to run through Sentai footage for an episode no matter the correlation between the footage and the actual plot to the episode. Also, the whole laptop being the source of the transporting dilemma was more laughable than the plot needed to be and I just couldn't take it seriously. Yes, I know the mythology of Power Rangers stretches the imagination to idiotic levels even for a kid's show, this just took me out of the episode, especially the genuinely unintentional hilarity of three of the rangers fighting for it to free Jack and Sky from the Blue Head's evil clutches....DUN. DUN, DUMMMBBB! -_-
Of course, even tho Boom messed up a lot, he gets his moment of redemption when he is sent by Kat to one of the alternate dimensions to save Jack and Sky. After some needless hijinks, he succeeds and the rangers manage to finish off and capture Tomars (Seriously!? -_O) as they usually do as Kruger takes back Boom's resignation letter as he forgot to sign it and remains apart the S.P.D. operation. Meh! Once again, I get the message of the episode in telling the truth and being a hero outside of being a ranger but meh! Didn't make me like Boom, only find him painfully irritating here. Even the heartwarming ending with him and his parents didn't rectify the episode's many shortcomings in showing Boom in an extremely juvenile and negligent light. Oh well. They can't all be winners right??? *Shrug* :(
